Synology DS920+ Review – Part 2 (Initial Setup)
Today we are going to look at how quickly and easily you can set up the Synology DS920+. At the time of writing this article, the latest operating system was 6.2.3.
For anyone setting up this NAS for the first time I would highly recommend reading the latest documentation from the Synology website: https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/download/DS920+#docs
I would recommend reading the following:
1. Hardware Installation Guide
2. User’s Guide
Inital Setup
Step 1: Follow the Hardware Installation Guide to install all your media etc.
Step 2: Power on your DS920+ NAS.
Step 3: Open a web browser on a computer connected to the same network as your NAS.
Step 4: Navigate to the following address in your web browser: http://synologynas:5000/
Note: If you have an advanced network setup this step may not work in your environment. If you cannot find the DS920+ using the above address please see step 5 below, otherwise continue on to step 6.
Step 5: If you are experiencing issues locating your new DS920+, navigate to https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/download/DS920+#utilities and download the Synology Assistant. For the purpose of this tutorial, we will be using Windows.
Step 5.1: Once you have downloaded the executable. Launch the Synology-assistant-6.2-24922.exe. (At this time of writing, 6.2-24922 was the latest version – please ensure you download the latest version available from the Synology website.)
Step 5.2: Select your language and click OK.
Step 5.3: On the Synology Assistant screen click Next.
Step 5.4: On the EULA screen click “I Agree.”
Step 5.5: Choose your installation location or accept the default and click Install.
Step 5.6: Once installation completes you will be asked to install the Synology Universal Serial Bus Controller.
Step 5.7: Launch the Synology Assistant. Once open, if the application does not automatically start a search, click the Search button. Once Synology Assistant finds the DS920+ the DSAssistant will launch.
Step 5.8: On the DSAssistant page read and accept the EULA and click OK.
Step 6: Once you have successfully located your DS920+ either via Step 4 or Step 5, you will be presented with your default browser and the Web Assistant configuration guide will load. Once you see this screen click “Set up.”
Step 7: There are two options to install the latest DSM onto your new DS920+.
Option 1: Manual Install via downloading the file from the Synology website and uploading manually.
Option 2: Automatically via the internet. If your DS920+ is connected to the internet during initial setup the Web Assistant agent can download the latest DSM automatically.
For the purposes of this blog I have chosen to download the file and proceed with Option 1.
Step 8: Once you select the method to install the DSM the wait begins.
Step 9: Once your DS920+ restarts you will be asked to set up an administrator account. (Enter something meaningful to yourself and don’t forget it :P). Once complete click Next.
Step 10: For the purposes of this blog, we will skip the QuickConnect set up as this can be done later and will be covered in a later blog.
Step 11: Select Yes when the warning appears. If you skip this step, you will need to setup port forwarding and remote access later.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You have completed the setup of your Synology DS920+. Click Go to be taken to the Desktop.
Once you arrive at the Synology Desktop, you will see a few screens asking some final setup questions and then the world is your oyster!
